The Liebster Award: Community and 11 Blogs You Need To Follow
I was nominated for the Liebster Award (go here for all the official rules and some more info on the award) by my sweet friend Sydney over at the Sweetly blog. This award is a fun way to get to know other bloggers, and also discover new blogs to follow! The rules are pretty simple:
- Link to the blog who nominated you (a simple thanks is the least I can do!)
- Answer the 11 questions they asked you
- Ask 11 new, super fun questions!
- Nominate 11 more blogs (share the love!)
I am so excited about this award – not because it’s fun to get nominated and maybe win, but because it shows the community that is possible in the online world. The support and encouragement that I have received from fellow bloggers, new and more experienced, has been amazing. No matter where we are on our blogging journey, we have a lot in common. I have made some really special friends since starting my blog, and they alone make this worth it.
Whether you blog or not, community is so important. Do you have a community of people around you? Someone on a similar journey, or someone who has been through the same things you’re going through now? Support like that is invaluable. Take a moment today to say thanks to those people who are behind you, every step of the way.
Get To Know Me
Now, here are my answers to Sydney’s Liebster questions, so you can get to know me a little more:
1. What is your favorite weekend activity?
I love going out and doing something with my husband on the weekend. It’s fun just getting out of the house to specifically spend time together. I doesn’t necessarily matter what we’re doing – going to a local event, the symphony (admittedly, one of my favourites!), mini golfing, window shopping, trying a new restaurant, whatever. As long as we’re doing it together.
2. What steps do you take to make sure you are finding rest and taking care of your mental and physical health?
This is something that I’m currently learning about and discovering what works best for me. It can be tricky, especially when there’s always something to be done. But intentionally resting is just so important. Resting looks different on different days, but without a doubt has to include at least these two things: quiet time with God and disconnecting from technology. A little bit of technology-time is good to relax and turn my brain off, but too much time leaves me feeling empty and sad, which is the opposite of the goal of resting. I need that quiet time to fill myself up and rejuvenate. Whatever else I do during rest (reading, being creative, spending time with family and friends), I make sure it’s something that will fill me up.
3. What is your favorite Devotional (or self-improvement book)?
I don’t have a lot of experience in this area to draw from. I haven’t really been able to find a devotional that I enjoy – all the ones I’ve tried seem so trite and surface-level. For my quiet time, I prefer to just read the Bible and use commentaries and things like that to dig deeper. As for self-improvement books, I just recently began to read more non-fiction for enjoyment and personal development. The book I’m reading right now, The Call by Os Guinness, has been really amazing. I’m only a few chapters in, but it’s already been so thought-provoking. It’s all about discovering God’s purpose for your life. It starts out discussing the importance of the Caller in the call, and that first and foremost (no matter what we are called to do specifically with our lives), we are called to follow God with our whole lives.
4. Outside of blogging and content creation, name one other thing that you are majorly passionate about.
Words! I love a good quote, I love a good book, I love a good script. Words have so much power. I love to read and hear powerful words (and maybe even hopefully write some). This also includes a passion for God’s Word – talk about some powerful words, this is definitely at the top of the list.
5. Tell us what a typical day for you usually looks like.
Well, typically my days all look totally different! I have a day job, so the days I work consist of me getting up way too early, spending the day taking care of kids, coming home and trying to relax for the evening (or actually clean my house or something). On the days I don’t work, I recently started a new blogging-work schedule for myself. I spend half the day (morning or afternoon, depending on how on-the-ball I am) going to a cafe or library to write or do whatever blogging thing I need to do, and the rest of the day at home, also doing blogging things. My time out of the house I try to keep dedicated to power-writing and doing the heavy-concentration tasks. Time at home needs to be the lighter, interrupt-able tasks because our dog really likes to insist that he has to go outside every five minutes or so.
6. If you could be a part of any royal family throughout history, which one would it be and why?
Well, this answer might get a little weird and dark. I am totally in love with the Romanovs. The first movie I ever saw in theatres was Anastasia with my dad. I read the Royal Diaries book about Anastasia and a few other fiction novels about the Romanovs. I researched all about them on the internet. I was able to go to the Anastasia musical in New York earlier this year. I’m no expert, but I probably know more than the average person about the last Russian Tsar and his family. Their story ends in absolute tragedy, with the whole family being executed in the Russian Revolution, but I just find the history of their family so interesting. So, as sad and dark as it is, the Romanovs are the royal family I know the most about, so I would want to be a part of their family.
7. What is one food that you never liked as a child but totally love now?
I thought about this question really hard, and I honestly cannot think of a single thing. I was never very picky, and my tastes have never really changed. The things I didn’t like then, I still don’t like (tomatoes, olives, liver).
8. Are you more introverted or extroverted?
I think people most often assume I’m an introvert because I can be quiet and shy. But I think I’m more of a mix. I don’t have the outgoing tendencies of an extrovert, but I love to be around people. If I’m alone for too long, I start to go a little stir-crazy and feel very lonely and sad (and sometimes “too long” can be a day). I need human interaction to function properly.
9. What is your go-to TV show to binge watch?
I will binge watch pretty much anything. If I like it, I try to whip through it as fast as possible. My husband and I really like to watch the Marvel Netflix originals. One show that I constantly go back to, though, is The Office. It still makes me laugh and cry like I’m watching it for the first time. I honestly feel like the characters are my friends at this point, and it’s a dream of mine to be a receptionist at a paper company.
10. What was the last movie you saw in theaters and what did you think of it?
Ant-Man and the Wasp! As previously stated, I’m a bit of a Marvel geek, and I really enjoyed the first Ant-Man movie, so I had high hopes for this movie. It did not disappoint! It was hilarious and heartwarming in all the right places. The villains were interesting and complex and the storyline was compelling (which, as a story-lover, are two things that are very important to me in a film). And I just loved the dynamic between Scott and his daughter. It’s just too cute. I could go on, but it was just an all-around fantastic movie. I also heard it was a pitiful follow up to Infinity War, and I could not disagree more. If it had tried to be huge and epic and dark, it would have fallen flat, but it was completely its own thing and totally Ant-Man.
11. If you could go on a missions trip to any country, danger and finances not being a factor, what country would it be?
Literally anywhere. I love to travel so much, I love going to new places, and the missions trips that I have been on have been such incredible experiences. I feel like if I were to pick a place I wanted to go on a missions trip, it would be for purely selfish reasons; it all depends on where God would call me. Somewhere in Africa would be cool, because I haven’t been to that continent yet. But it also might be cool to go back to a place I’ve already been, having a bit of a foundation of cultural understanding.
